Tchaikovsky "Romeo and Juliet" listening assignment (due Dec. 9)
Listen to any version of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture" (approximately 20 minutes), preferably using headphones to immerse yourself in the music and avoid distractions.
While listening, hand write (paper and pen or pencil, not typed) your stream of consciousness observations of the music, touching upon the following three points:
1. The musical characteristics of the piece that identify it as music from the Romantic era, but not the Classical or Baroque eras -- Why is it Romantic music?
2. Imagine how what you hear relates to the story of Romeo and Julliet -- what could be happening in the storyline at certain sections of the composition? (You may cite specific times in the recording or video that you are listening to).
3. How does the overture make you feel?
If you are not familiar with the story of Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet," then take a few minutes to read a summary of the plot before proceeding with the listening assignment:
The listening assignment is due on the next "O" day (Friday). The deadline for the paper on the musical contributions of a Classical-era composer of your choice (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or another) is now pushed back to the "W" day next week (Monday).
Please feel free to ask any questions.
