Benjamin Meiklejohn is a performing musician and lifelong oboe player. Meiklejohn studied music at both the University of Maine and University of Southern Maine, under the direction of former longtime principal oboist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Neil Boyer.
Meiklejohn has performed oboe with a variety of ensembles across differing genres, including with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Maine Pops Concert Band, Maine Pro Musica, Bowdoin International Music Festival and with notable modern rock artists such as John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Baron of The Spin Doctors and others. Meiklejohn has performed in operas, musicals, and jazz ensembles and appeared on several recordings of artists from Portland, Maine.
A northern New Englander, Meiklejohn grew up in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine before attending school at the University of Maine, where he served as a two-term president of the University of Maine Student Government, Inc. and as a student representative to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.
While living in Portland for 19 years, Meiklejohn served for six years on the Portland School Committee, where he learned the intricacies of challenges faced by modern educational institutions.
Music and writing are his two primary lifelong passions.
