On August 2, the Madawaska School Department approved a COVID-19 Protocol Plan. The plan can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/37erXgJ. Slides 6 and 7 on the plan are the updated Community Spread data provided by the US CDC, which is updated daily at the US CDC Community Spread webpage.

When the Madawaska School Committee approved the plan on August 2, Aroostook County was in a level of “Moderate” community spread. As of yesterday, Aroostook has moved to a “High” level of community spread, with more than 100 positive cases in the county per 10,000 people over a 7-day span.

Item #2 on Slide 12 of the Madawaska COVID-19 Protocol Plan, states the following: “Mask use in schools will be optional as long as community spread of COVID-19 remains low or moderate. It will be recommended that non-vaccinated individuals wear a mask.”

Please note that once the level of community spread goes back down to a “moderate” spread, we will reinstate optional masking. Until that time, universal masking will be in place in all Madawaska School Department Schools for all students, staff, and visitors.

More information about the return to school, including school-specific information will come from the office of the school principal. Please keep in mind the back to school dates! We wish you a very happy and safe remainder of the summer break and we look forward to seeing your children in school this school year!

Sincerely,

Benjamin Sirois - Superintendent of Schools Madawaska School Department
